The Phoenix Tower is a medieval structure on the north-eastern corner of the City Walls, although it stands on or near the site of the original Roman feature.

One of the tales about the tower is that in September 1645, Charles I stood on it and watched his forces being vanquished on Rowton Moor. I'd long wondered how that could have been possible, since the tower stands at the very opposite corner of Chester from the battlefield. According to The Chester Virtual Stroll, he probably just saw some of his men being chased across nearby Hoole Heath.

The tower was extensively repaired about 40 years ago.
