This is Northgate Street in Chester, as viewed from top of the North Gate itself. The tower of the Town Hall can be seen in the background

The Northgate, in its early-mediaeval incarnation, also contained a particularly noisome gaol and place of execution. The current structure dates from the early 19th century - yet another of the contributions of Thomas Harrison to the look of the city.

This view has changed remarkably little in a hundred years, but has been put under regular threat in recent years by proposed developments which all seemed designed to make the place look like just about anywhere else.
