The Empire Theatre opened in 1925. It's the largest theatre in the city, and the largest two-tiered theatre in the UK.

The first 'real' rock gig I ever went to was here. Me and some friends came here in October 1980 to see Hawkwind play on their Levitation tour (supported by Vardis, if anyone's interested).

It was quite a rare event, in that it was one of the few gigs on that tour which was played by the line-up which had featured on the album. Ginger Baker (drums) and Tim Blake (keyboards) left the band part-way through the tour. I still have the programme somewhere...
