The Great Georges Community Cultural Project has been housed in this mid-19th-century former church at the junction of Great George Street and Nelson Street since 1968, and was probably the first initiative of its kind in England.

It sits on the edge of Liverpool's long-established Chinatown.

But why the name? Well, years of industrial pollution had turned the stone black. Even after it was all cleaned off, the name stuck.
