I'm not usually at home at lunchtime on a Friday, but being in the
middle of my annual June fortnight off work meant that I was here to
answer the front door to a knock.
On opening the door, I found a petite young woman standing there
under an enormous umbrella and wearing a jacket advertising a charity.
Now I have to admit that my first reaction in such circumstances tends
to be one of suspicion, but her accent was absolutely beguiling
(Burnley, I discovered later) and she appeared to be such a character
that I invited her in.
(Yes, I'm all too well aware of what could be surmised - wrongly -
about a middle-aged man inviting a vivacious young woman into his
house, thankyouverymuch. But given that I'd extended the favour to a
similarly impressive young man just over a year ago, I
might as well be mistaken for an equal-opportunities perv).
Anyway, we chatted for quite some time about each other, and she
told me that she was hoping to hear her degree results shortly. I was
sufficiently impressed by her personality and her professionalism to
sign up to donate to the National Deaf Children's Society:
If you ever read this Alice, keep on doing what you do, and I hope
you get that 2:1.
