Google Garble, Google Garble (II)...
Revisiting this issue in an access of late-night boredom, it seems that the problem was with my audio settings. If I change the configuration of my VIA HD Audio Deck to just 2 channels, the problem with Chrome not playing audio properly goes away.
Since I always have it set to six channels (for the surround-sound system), this might be a problem. Except that I don't use Chrome as my browser of choice, only using it to test any changes to page layouts or to try to use a page which won't load properly on Firefox. So, poo to you, Google...
