Apoptygma Berzerk - "Major Tom (Coming Home)" (2013)
Trying to cheer myself up whilst off work with one of those enhanced doses of sinusitis which have a knock-on effect on my throat and chest (I hate being ill - my body lets me down in a dozen wretched ways in the normal run of events; I've no need for it to engage overdrive as well), and pondering the legacy of David Bowie again, I remembered a track which took up where Bowie's Space Oddity left off, with the story of Major Tom drifting in his tin can far above the world.
The track was by the German singer/musician Peter Schilling, and was the only hit he really had after it was taken from his Error In The System LP and released as a single in 1983.
But I knew it from a different source and by a different artist, thanks to the good offices of the redoutable DJ Todd Clayton of Real Synthetic Audio. Back in 2013, he played a cover version of the song by the Norwegian band Apoptygma Berzerk which they had just released on an EP.
I think it has a lot more punch than Schilling's original, so I thought that I'd give you the opportunity to hear it.
