Those Charming Men
Sometime around 1999, the legend that was John Peel laid down a challenge to David Gedge, leader of Peel favourites The Wedding Present:
"Why don't you write a song containing the words 'your charms'?"
(Peel was a child of the 1940s and 1950s, so there were still plenty of songs during his formative years which had that phrase or some similar sentiment in the lyrics)
Within a short space of time, Gedge had done precisely that, and recorded it with his 'other band', Cinerama, in Chicago under the auspices of another musical giant, the producer Steve Albini.
Did Gedge meet the challenge? Did he ever! This is the brilliant (and, of course, utterly charming) result:
