As someone who has always been fascinated by the words people use, and by how the vocabulary for quite common things can vary enormously from place to place (and I would - once again - recommend a read of Iona & Peter Opie's great work The Lore And Language Of Schoolchildren for an historical overview), this quiz at the New York Times is simply wonderful.

(Don't just stop after the first set of questions: there are ninety-odd in total beyond the point where you get your result).

How good it is can be judged by the accuracy of the result (at least in my case):
