Out Of Africa
I've mentioned many times down the years how my membership of (and moderator duties for) the splendid 45cat has led me to discover music that I would never otherwise have encountered.
Here's another example, and it's a beaut.
Thanks to member Amshumarthen, I've found this glorious track from the Moazmbiquan band Grupo "Bantu", one of a number of singles they released either side of 1980.
I've no idea what the title He Nanduena means. Hell, I don't even know what language it's in, except that it's likely to be one of the Bantu tongues which form the largest language group there.
The song is typically African in its style, but rather than the fast-picking guitar and vocal exuberance which typified the sort of stuff that John Peel used to play, this is far more laid back (although it still features that sort of echo-y vocal production to be found in the works of, for example, Zaïre's Grand Maître Franco). The melody seems to have a somewhat European style, which is appropriate considering that the Portuguese had only been thrown out of the country some four years before.
Either way, it's a real treat. Enjoy!
