A Life For Life

Portrait of David Attenborough

In an age of despair and deceit, and when the entire planet is being run by cowards and psychopaths, let us take the time to celebrate - with something of a sense of relief, it must be said - the one-hundredth birthday of a man whose television programmes revolutionised the way we - especially in the pampered, marauding West - view and understand the dizzying and enchanting complexities of our world and the absolute necessity (if only out of a sense of self-preservation) of taking proper care of it.

With a calm enthusiasm, with a knowledge tempered by humility, with a sense of awe and delight, and with a quiet humour, David Attenborough has over a period of nearly three-quarters of a century trimuphantly performed a vital duty very much in keeping with the old values of the BBC in which he was once a (somewhat reluctant) executive: to educate, to inform and to entertain. In doing so, he has left an unparalleled legacy for all who have come after him, many of whom were inspired to their own efforts by watching his programmes.

Many happy returns, sir, and thank you for it all.
